Marriage is the beginning of family. That is especially true on this occasion. (CHILDS NAME) is an important part of this relationship, and (HE or SHE) helps make this marriage a family.

As a child who illustrates the family nature of God's creation, we recognize (CHILDS NAME) and the significant role (HE or SHE) plays in the marriage we celebrate today.

(BRIDES NAME) and (GROOMS NAME) are presenting to (CHILDS NAME) this (OBJECT), given as a symbol for family unity and in recognition of the hope and joy made visible through this marriage.

(CHILDS NAME), the giving of this (OBJECT) is a promise to you of the continuing love which belongs to you as a member of this new family.

(CHILDS NAME), do you promise to continue to give your love to make this family a strong and happy one?

This was used when my parents were wed on May 16th, 1991. I was 8 at the time, and the only child. During the ceremony the officiator called me to stand between my mother and soon to be step-father. At the time I knew that I was to be called up but didn't realize that they were giving me a gold necklace with a charm. The charm was a claddah, it's meaning is:

Friendship. Loyalty. Love. The Claddagh is an eternal symbol of all three. It is an Irish emblem of two hands reaching for each other around a heart and topped with a crown.

As the officiator asked me the last question he placed the necklace around my neck.
